NJ homeowners can claim up to $3,200 per year in federal tax credits on qualifying energy improvements in 2026. Here's exactly which projects qualify, how NJ's own programs work, and what permits your renovation requires.

Home renovation rarely generates tax savings for NJ homeowners, but energy-efficiency upgrades are a significant exception.

The federal Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 created or expanded tax credits that allow NJ homeowners to claim up to $3,200 per year on qualifying energy improvements, running through 2032. NJ has its own rebate programs that stack on top.

Note: Tax law changes frequently. Verify current credit limits and eligibility with a qualified tax professional or irs.gov before filing.

Federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C)

30% of cost, up to $3,200 per year, available through December 31, 2032. Full requirements at IRS.gov Section 25C.

ImprovementAnnual Credit Limit
Heat pump HVAC systemUp to $2,000
Heat pump water heaterUp to $2,000 (combined with heat pump HVAC)
Insulation and air sealingUp to $1,200
Exterior windows and skylightsUp to $600
Exterior doorsUp to $250/door, max $500
Electrical panel upgrade (if required for above)Up to $600

The $3,200 annual cap resets every year. A NJ homeowner who installs a heat pump HVAC in 2026 and new windows and insulation in 2027 can claim up to $3,200 in each year.

Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 48E)

A separate, uncapped credit: 30% on solar panels, solar water heaters, battery storage (minimum 3 kWh), and geothermal heat pumps, with no dollar cap. Given NJ's high electricity rates ($0.18–$0.22/kWh vs. national average of ~$0.16/kWh), solar with battery storage delivers particularly strong ROI in NJ.

NJ State Programs That Stack With Federal Credits

  • NJ Clean Energy Program: rebates for heat pump water heaters ($250–$400), heat pump HVAC ($500–$2,000), and whole-home weatherization through Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (up to $4,000). See current rebates at njcleanenergy.com.
  • NJ HMFA Home Repair Program: low-interest loans for income-qualified homeowners covering structural repairs, roof replacement, HVAC, and plumbing. Details at njhousing.gov.
