How to Choose the Right Home Renovation Contractor in NJ

The single most expensive mistake in home renovation isn't choosing the wrong tile or going over budget on appliances. It's hiring the wrong contractor. Step 1: Verify the NJ HIC License: Before Anything Else

In New Jersey, anyone who performs home improvement work for compensation must hold a valid Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license issued by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. An unlicensed contractor cannot legally pull permits, cannot offer the consumer protections the license provides, and in many cases carries no meaningful insurance.

How to verify: go to njconsumeraffairs.gov, click "License Verification," and enter the contractor's name or license number. The license should be active, not expired or suspended.

Step 2: Confirm Two Types of Insurance

• General liability insurance: minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence. Ask for the certificate naming you as additional insured.
• Workers' compensation insurance: required by NJ law for any contractor with employees. If an uninsured worker is injured on your property, you can be held liable.

Step 3: Get Three Written, Itemized Bids
